LIFE is a financial instrument of the European Union for the cofinancing of environmental initiatives in the EU Member States, accession candidate countries and third countries bordering on the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea.
The general objective of LIFE is to contribute, in the one hand, to the implementation, updating and development of Community environment policy and of environmental legislation, in particular as regards the integration of environment into other policies, and, in the other hand, to sustainable development in the Community.
Launched in 1992, LIFE Programme is now in the third phase, which started in 2000 and has been extended until 2006.
LIFE programme is divided in three thematic components: LIFE-Nature, LIFE-Environment and LIFE-Third countries.
BIOSOIL demonstration project, approved by the European Commission LIFE
Unit in 2004, fulfils the specific objectives of LIFE-Environment and, in
particular, aims to integrate considerations on the environment and on sustainable
development in urban land-use development and planning,
